Hannah: John's Invitation

Hannah: John's Invitation

I was wrapping up a client shoot at the beach when I ran into my friend John — a wonderful guy, great stylist, someone I've known for years. He was there with Hannah, working through their own session. When I finished with my client he waved me over and said get in there. So I did.

That's how this one happened. No plan, no setup — just a friend extending an invitation and a subject generous enough to keep going after she'd already been in front of a camera for a while.

Hannah was patient and easy. The kind of person who doesn't overthink it. And there's a connection that goes back further than this session — I used to photograph her mother back in the day. That kind of thing doesn't happen if you haven't been at this long enough, and I have.

The location did a lot of the heavy lifting. We were on the rocks at the water's edge, coral and limestone formations all around us, the ocean catching the last of the day behind her. Golden hour came in soft and warm and we just let it do its job. No additional light, no reflector — just the available light wrapping around her and the natural bounce off the water and the pale rock faces. The Nikon Z6 handled it beautifully, pulling detail out of the shadows without fighting the highlights.
